Truly great music

In his book, Reflections On The Movies, Ken Gire lists Amadeus among the top ten list of films that had an impact on him. Incidentally, a friend of mine has been insisting that I watch the movie. In his words, it's absurd for a lover of classical music not to have watched Amadeus.

So, I watched it tonight. The story of probably the most brilliant composer ever. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. How someone could compose concertos in their head is beyond me, then again, some of Beethoven's best music was written after he turned deaf. These guys had music in their head and hearts, they didn't need to hear it played out. Johann Sebastian Bach once said, "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul." After watching the movie, I understand that a little better. I also agree that the music written by these three composers is incomparable to anything written before or after.

The story of a true genius is usually marked with indifference, hostility, depression and angst. I guess that's a mark of a true genius - when their legacy stretches beyond their lifetime and grows stronger with the passing of centuries.
