Application Letters - Why you should keep it simple

I receive hundreds of job applications every week. Competition for jobs is tough and I don't have the time to sift through countless resumés. The application letter is my yard stick for deciding whether a particular candidate is worth two more minutes of my time.

An example (a real email from my inbox), of how ineffective most application letters are:

The HR,

Sir,
Given to understand that there are vacancies in your concern, I hereby wish to apply for the same.
I have annexed my resume with this regard. And, should your choice fall upon me, it would me my endeavor, my diligence and attention to deserve your confidence. Anticipating an optimistic reply from your esteemed concern at the earliest.
I assure you, Sir, that on getting an opportunity to serve I will prove to be an asset to the organization.
