White, black or grey?

Is it true that people are either conservative, right-wing; liberal, left-wing or in the middle? I've been thinking about this for the past few days - I'm very liberal in certain aspects of life, conservative in a few and on the fence on the rest. Is it right to box people in a certain sector just because of their views on certain issues? Is it right then to blame certain events on a certain kind of people?
I was watching BBC this morning - Shia Muslims in Iraq (labelled insurgents), inciting hatred and violence against those who did not follow the true path (in this case, Sunni Muslims). I can imagine Bush sitting in his armchair having a chuckle, no need to fight the Muslims, let them kill each other.
My point - who's side do you take? Are the insurgents really the bad guy? Ask them and they will justify their actions, citing mis-represented religious verses. So, in their mind, they are not sinning, instead, they're just following a command from a higher authority. So what is right and what is wrong? Wait, don't answer that, cos if you do - you've already condemned someone who is doing exactly the same thing you would do if you were brought up and conditioned to live and think like them.
My point - stop judging, start empathising.
