Dominique Varma is in Hyderabad to introduce her novel, "After the Deluge." The story is a fictional account of Nikolai Roerich, a Russian artist who lived in the Himalayan foothills. Roerich, suspected to have been a double agent for the Americans and the Russians in India, was friends with F.D. Roosevelt, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rabindranath Tagore and other important historical figures of his time.
One of the key characters in the book is called, 'Jeremy.' When I met the author later and told her my name, she seemed excited. Apparently Jeremy's character is developed to the point where he is the protagonist of her next novel. Excellent!
Dominique visited India in 1982 to study Indian cinema in Pune. She met her Indian husband there and has spent considerable time in India, but lives in France. In meeting her, I discovered a key characteristic of a writer - always interested in the stories of the people they meet.
Inspiration to write is surprising - it comes from unexpected sources.
