Cementing Relationships

My fitness coach is a certified outlier. He lives on the dust off the pages from health manuals and magazines. His methods are outlandish, yet natural. Last week, we drove to a construction site and requested the workers to let me carry a 30 kilo sand bag up four flights of stairs. This week, he got me to ride a bicycle with a weighted backpack, to meet our new labouring friends. They were happy to see me again. "Of course he can carry a sand bag, in fact, we'll even let him carry this 50Kg cement bag to the top!" Hah!

There is method to the madness though. I prefer using natural work-out techniques. The proof is in how strong it makes your mental faculties. Carrying a cement bag through a maze of half-constructed stairs demands the kind of focus that is not required in your local gym.

When we were done, our construction-site friends politely enquired when might we return, so they could prepare some 'real heavy stuff.' All in the spirit of helping me get stronger, I'm sure!

P.S. A standard labourer's day consists of transporting 40-50 sand bags at the pay rate of peanuts per day. Anyone complaining about their work load needs to spend ten minutes with these men to understand the reality of hard work.
