A Modern Man's Need For Challenge

Sean is an American living in Australia, a programmer who just turned 41. We had a lengthy discussion over the latest programming trends and current demand for IT professionals. Talk of cross compilers for Operating Systems, web development and online trading softwares set off a torrent of thoughts in my head. The modern man may not kill beasts in the wild and trek through ferocious conditions to provide for his family, but he certainly thrives on challenge.
The revelation was sparked by my interest in the latest technological advances. I haven't practiced my programming skills since the turn of the millenium, but felt motivated to investigate the changes in the industry. Learning a new programming language or platform is a challenge. Learning in general, is a greater challenge outside our core early development years, up to age seven. Acquiring or upgrading skills, for instance, picking up a new language or musical instrument, learning to climb mountains, can prove daunting. But embracing challenges motivates men. We want to constantly be pushed beyond our boundaries, changing and growing.
