Trouble With Email

My old hotmail address has been subject to a virus which copied my contacts onto a remote server. Even after deleting all my contacts and closing the account a year ago, my old friends still receive occasional suspect emails allegedly from me.

Truth is, it doesn't bother me, my friends are sensible enough to recognize spam. There's a niggling thought though that I'm somehow responsible for fixing the error. Something to do with cyber ethics. It's a nuisance alright, if you're at the receiving end. Short of tracking where the emails are sent from and sending an army of oompa loompas to blast the corrupt server, I am short of options. Let me know if you have any reasonable ideas that might work.
