"Jeremy," he says to me, "You cannot trust anyone." He looks up from his half empty demitasse cup of Greek coffee. Respect. The man has a quiet sense of stoic defiance that shows only through his intense eyes. The kind of man who was handed a gun and shot it against his own free will.
We were strangers twenty minutes ago, but one bad joke led to another and he invited me in for a cuppa. His wife was rather jovial. A strange couple.

"I don't think I could go through life not trusting anyone."
"You'll learn. The hard way."
Why do people say that? What is the hard way? Is there an easy way to learn life lessons? Sign me up - night classes, summer classes, whatever it takes.

An hour later, I walked out thinking, "Mate, if you didn't trust anyone, what was I, a perfect stranger, doing in your living room, sipping coffee?"
