If inanimate objects could express discontentment, my bicycle would be pouting. I think it is, anyway - from lack of use. Too wet to be out on a bike. Ok, that's just what I was waiting for...
The gentleman who sold me the bike told me last year that the Monsoon season was the best time to sell a bike. "Kids are back at school and they don't mind the rain. Infact, they want to get wet in the rain on their bicycles." His shop is 20 metres down the road from Big Bazaar in Abids - you won't miss the row of newly polished cycles on display on the road. I think, between Ching and me - we've sustained his quarterly profit projections!
Since my last, "Get on your bike, save the planet" round of articles, nothing much has been done in the city to curb further damage to the environment. Other newspapers have started writing about green topics - but there still is no perceivable action plan. They're actually chopping down more trees to accomodate the entry of new businesses. Hyderabad needs a Mayor - someone who can balance out the tremendous economic growth with environmentally conscious, sustainable development of the city.
It's a tough world for a biker - the greenest person on the road, exerting force on the pedals and in turn breathing in more of the toxic fumes than anyone else... life in a puppy mill. Alright, so not everyone is gonna run out and buy a bike to do their bit to save the world, maybe car pooling is a better option for now, huh?
