The problem with New Year resolutions

New Year resolutions have become a cliché, it's something all of us are almost expected to do. People wait until the 1st of January to change certain aspects of their life. What hogwash! No disrespect meant to those seriously trying to improve themselves. If you have the courage to make a resolution, form a plan to ensure you stay on track. It takes three weeks to form a good habit. After three weeks, your habit becomes part of your lifestyle.

Suggestions to help you form good habits that will stick:
1) Don't talk about it. In the words of a Nike shoe, Just do it! I know - kinda daggy, but appropriate. The only time you tell people about your resolve to change is when you need a support group - someone who will help you when your resolve starts to wane.
2) Self discipline. Any form of improvement requires strict self-discipline. You will have to sacrifice certain things. For instance, if you want to cut down on drinking, opt for dinners at restaurants with friends, instead of a night out at a pub or club.
3) Look ahead. Picture the benefits and imagine the changed you. If you want to stop smoking, remind yourself of the health benefits, the money saved.
4) Form new habits to kick old, unhealthy ones. Find new hobbies and interests.
